It feels like yesterday when we heard the terrible heartbreaking news that Aaliyah was killed in a plane crash August 25, 2001. I remember sitting around with my college roommates watching the news glued to the screen and crying like we lost our best friend. We were hurt and shocked that the very girl we admired and loved so much had left us. We had just got the moves down from the Rock the Boat video trying so hard to mimic the smooth hip movements that Aaliyah had down to a science. Her music just had a vibe that made you want to dance and get your slow motion on. We used to bump One and a Million in my old boyfriends Chevy Impala the bass on that song with Aaliyah’s voice to match was just bangin’. I very rarely get that same feeling of euphoria when listening to music out these days. Aaliyah was her own person and brought something special to the R&B world. There was a peaceful demeanor about Aaliyah like she was always the voice of reason and the person to go to when you had trouble or just needed a friend to talk to.
BET will be airing a remembering Aaliyah special August 25,2011 and it is something that you don’t want to miss if you’re an Aaliyah fan and also for those who didn’t know her to get a glimpse into the life of an amazing artist that has gone too soon.
